Get your WAVs into an MPC 4000

The MPC 4000 loads from a USB stick in its front port. BackFlip builds a 64-pad program around your WAVs, all four banks in one file, and saves it straight to the stick. Here is the way that works, tested on my own 4000.

How it works

From a folder of WAVs to a program on your MPC 4000.

  1. 1

Format a USB stick on the 4000

On the 4000: Load or Save, then UTILITY (F2). In the Do field, turn the jog wheel to FULL or QUICK FORMAT, choose the removable USB device (not the hard drive), and press DO IT.

  2. 2

Drop your sounds on the pads

Drag WAVs onto the pads one at a time, or a whole folder at once. Four banks of 16, so up to 64 sounds per kit.

  3. 3

Pick MPC 4000 and shape your sounds

The RAM meter switches to the 4000. Set the arrow to your RAM, from the stock 16 MB up to 512 MB. Trim, fade, filter, tune, reverse and level any pad if you like.

  4. 4

Hit CONVERT, save to the stick

BackFlip saves the WAVs and the .AKP program in one folder, straight onto the stick. Plug the stick into the front USB port and load the program.

Getting the kit onto your 4000

One way in, and it's the simple one.

◆USB stick, front port

Format the stick on the 4000 first, then save from BackFlip straight to it. Tested with a 64 GB stick. If your 4000 has trouble reading a larger one, try a smaller stick.

◆Formatting on a computer instead

It has to be MS-DOS (FAT) with the Master Boot Record scheme, and you erase the whole device, not just the volume. Formatting on the 4000 is simpler.

How much fits

~1.5 minStock 16 MB, stereo
~51 minMaxed at 512 MB, stereo

BackFlip writes 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAVs. A stock 16 MB 4000 holds about a minute and a half of stereo sound. A fully loaded 512 MB machine holds about 51 min.

Set the MONO/STEREO switch to mono and stereo sounds fold down to mono, at half the memory.

Questions

My 4000 says "Device unknown (312)". What now?

That's the 4000 failing to read from the stick, not a problem with the files. The same files load fine from a different stick. Try another one, ideally a smaller one, formatted on the 4000.

Can I use a CompactFlash card?

No. The 4000 has no CompactFlash slot. Use a USB stick in the front port. The rear USB port is only for Akai's old akSys software and won't mount the drive on your computer.

Will it still sound like my MPC 4000?

Yes. Conversion has two halves: the AD going in and the DA coming out. Loading files only skips the input side. Every sound still plays back through your MPC 4000's DA and outputs, which is where a lot of that character lives.

What files does BackFlip make for the 4000?

One WAV per sound and a single .AKP program with all 64 pads across the four banks.

Mac or Windows?

Both. BackFlip runs on macOS 13 or later (Intel and Apple Silicon, signed and notarized by Apple) and on Windows 10 and 11. Your purchase email has both downloads.
