Get your WAVs into an MPC 2000 or 2000XL

The MPC 2000 and 2000XL only read their own sample and program files, from floppy or SCSI. BackFlip builds those files from your WAVs and writes them straight to a Gotek or a ZuluSCSI, so the kit is on your pads in minutes, not after an afternoon of loading sounds one by one.

BackFlip with MPC 2000 selected and a kit loaded on the pads

How it works

From a folder of WAVs to a program on your MPC 2000.

  1. 1

Drop your sounds on the pads

Drag WAVs onto the pads one at a time, or a whole folder at once. Four banks of 16, so up to 64 sounds per kit, laid out just like the pads on your 2000.

  2. 2

    Pick MPC 2000 or 2000XL

The RAM meter switches to your model and shows how much of its memory the kit takes. Set the arrow to the RAM your machine has, from the stock 2 MB up to 32 MB.

  3. 3

    Shape each sound (optional)

Trim, fade, filter, tune, reverse and level any pad. What you hear when you click a pad is what gets written to your 2000.

  4. 4

    Hit GOTEK or ZULUSCSI

BackFlip writes the .SND sample files and the .PGM program straight to your Gotek stick or ZuluSCSI SD card. Plug it back in, load the program on the 2000, play.

Three ways onto your 2000

The 2000 loads from floppy or SCSI. BackFlip writes straight to the modern stand-ins for both.

◆Gotek (floppy emulator)

BackFlip writes your kit as floppy disk images, numbered the way the Gotek expects (DSKA0001.img and on). A kit too big for one floppy is split across as many disks as it needs, automatically. Always write with the GOTEK button: dragging files onto the stick yourself can break the Gotek's boot setup.

◆ZuluSCSI (SCSI emulator)

BackFlip builds a whole hard-drive image (HD1.img, HD2.img and so on) for each kit. Pick a SCSI ID from 1 to 6, copy the image to the root of the SD card, and the 2000 sees it as a hard drive. Leave HD0 alone, that's your setup disk. Power the ZuluSCSI from a wall charger, not your computer's USB.

◆SCSI-to-CF adapter

Some 2000 owners use a CompactFlash card in a SCSI-to-CF adapter instead. That works too: hit CONVERT, save the kit to a folder, and copy it over.

How much fits

~12 sStock 2 MB
~3 minMaxed out at 32 MB

BackFlip writes 2000 sounds as 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo, the 2000's own format. That makes a stock 2 MB machine hold about 12 seconds of sound in all, and a 2000 with 32 MB a little over three minutes.

Two ways to fit more: pull in the End to cut tails you don't need, or Tune a sound up. A break pitched up gets shorter, so it takes less memory, and you can tune it back down on the 2000. The RAM meter shows the difference as you go.

“Years of dead ends, software that worked one day and failed the next, and endless frustrating nonsense. Then, like a beam of light, BackFlip appeared, and my favorite device finally came back to life. I made a beat for the first time in years.”

Questions

Will it still sound like my MPC 2000?

Yes. Conversion has two halves: the AD going in and the DA coming out. Loading files only skips the input side. Every sound still plays back through your 2000's DA and outputs, which is where a lot of that character lives. I tested this a lot on my own MPC 2000, and it sounds like my MPC to me.

Do I need a Gotek or a ZuluSCSI?

You need some way to get files into the 2000. A Gotek (a USB stick in place of the floppy drive) or a ZuluSCSI (an SD card in place of a SCSI hard drive) is the easiest, and BackFlip writes to both directly. Free setup files for each are on this page.

What files does BackFlip make for the 2000?

One .SND file per sound and a .PGM program that puts every sound on its pad. Load the program on the 2000 and the whole kit comes in with it.

Is the 2000XL any different?

Not for BackFlip. The 2000XL has its own button in the app and uses the same Gotek and ZuluSCSI exports, and BackFlip owners load kits on their 2000XLs the same way.

Why not just use MPC Editor?

MPC Editor is Windows only and was last updated in 2011. BackFlip runs natively on Mac and Windows, writes straight to a Gotek or ZuluSCSI, lets you edit every sound first, and saves your kits as project files to reopen anytime. If MPC Editor already does what you need, no shade, use what works for you.

Mac or Windows?

Both. BackFlip runs on macOS 13 or later (Intel and Apple Silicon, signed and notarized by Apple) and on Windows 10 and 11. Your purchase email has both downloads.
