Get your WAVs into an MPC 3000

Chop in your DAW, send it to the 3000. BackFlip turns your WAVs into the 3000's own sample and program files and writes them straight into your ZuluSCSI drive, into the partition you pick. Your MPC 3000 needs Vailixi OS.

How it works

From a folder of WAVs to a program on your MPC 3000.

  1. 1

Drop your sounds on the pads

Drag WAVs onto the pads one at a time, or a whole folder at once. Four banks of 16, so up to 64 sounds per kit.

  2. 2

    Pick MPC 3000

The RAM meter switches to the 3000 and shows how much of its memory the kit takes. Set the arrow to the RAM your machine has, from the stock 2 MB up to 32 MB.

  3. 3

    Shape each sound (optional)

Trim, fade, filter, tune, reverse and level any pad. What you hear when you click a pad is what gets written to your 3000.

  4. 4

    Hit ZULUSCSI

Pick the drive image your 3000 formatted and an empty partition (A to Z). BackFlip writes the .SND sounds and the .PGM program into it. Copy the image back to the SD card, select the partition on the 3000, and load the program.

Getting the kit onto your 3000

BackFlip writes 3000 kits into a SCSI drive, the way the 3000 likes them.

◆ZuluSCSI (SCSI emulator)

BackFlip writes into a drive image your 3000 already formatted and only touches the partition you pick. It shows what's on each partition first, so you don't write over a kit you want to keep.

◆Your own route

Hit CONVERT and BackFlip saves the .SND sounds and the .PGM program to a folder, for any other way you move files to your 3000.

How much fits

~24 sStock 2 MB, mono
~6 min32 MB, mono

The 3000 plays 16-bit, 44.1 kHz sound, in mono or stereo. With the MONO/STEREO switch on mono, a stock 2 MB machine holds about 24 seconds of sound, and a 3000 with 32 MB about six minutes. Stereo takes twice the memory.

To fit more, pull in the End to cut tails you don't need, or Tune a sound up and tune it back down on the 3000. The RAM meter shows the difference as you go.

“Chop your samples in Ableton quick and it's good to go in a matter of minutes instead of a couple of hours of dialing in samples and programs on the 1994 MPC 3000.”

Questions

Why does the MPC 3000 need Vailixi OS?

BackFlip only supports what I have tested on real hardware, and the 3000 is confirmed on Vailixi OS. The stock OS is also very limiting for anyone loading from an SD card or ZuluSCSI. It only works with one drive image at a time, so you cannot switch between images, and it is rigid about SCSI IDs. Vailixi fixes those, and it is a great upgrade for the 3000 whether or not you use BackFlip.

Can I use a Gotek on the 3000?

Not with BackFlip. On the 3000, BackFlip writes to a ZuluSCSI drive, or to a folder with CONVERT.

What files does BackFlip make for the 3000?

One .SND file per sound, in the 3000's own format, and a .PGM program that puts every sound on its pad. Load the program and the kit comes in with it.

Mac or Windows?

Both. BackFlip runs on macOS 13 or later (Intel and Apple Silicon, signed and notarized by Apple) and on Windows 10 and 11. Your purchase email has both downloads.
