Get your WAVs into an MPC 1000 or 2500

The MPC 1000 and 2500 read WAVs, but building a 64-pad program around them on the machine takes ages. BackFlip builds the program for you: drop your sounds on the pads, convert, and save the kit to your CompactFlash card. Tested on my own 1000 and 2500, both running JJOS.

How it works

From a folder of WAVs to a program on your MPC 1000 / 2500.

  1. 1

Drop your sounds on the pads

Drag WAVs onto the pads one at a time, or a whole folder at once. Four banks of 16, so up to 64 sounds per kit.

  2. 2

    Pick 1000 or 2500

The RAM meter switches to your model and shows how much of its memory the kit takes. Set the arrow to the RAM your machine has, from the stock 16 MB up to 128 MB.

  3. 3

    Shape each sound (optional)

Trim, fade, filter, tune, reverse and level any pad. What you hear when you click a pad is what gets written to your MPC.

  4. 4

    Hit CONVERT

BackFlip saves the kit as one folder: a WAV for each sound and the .PGM program. Save it to your CompactFlash card, put the card in the MPC, and load the program. The sounds come in with it.

Getting the kit onto your MPC

No floppy or SCSI here. The kit is a plain folder of files.

◆CompactFlash card

Put the card in your computer's card reader, save the kit folder from BackFlip straight to it, then load the program on the MPC.

◆MPC 2500 internal drive

If your 2500 has an internal hard drive, mount it on your computer and drag the kit folder in.

How much fits

~1.5 minStock 16 MB, stereo
~3 minStock 16 MB, mono

BackFlip writes 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAVs. A stock 16 MB machine holds about a minute and a half of stereo sound, or about three minutes in mono. Maxed out at 128 MB, that's about 13 min of stereo.

Set the MONO/STEREO switch to mono and stereo sounds fold down to mono, at half the memory. For drums that is usually all you need.

Questions

Does it work with JJOS?

Yes. My own MPC 1000 and MPC 2500 both run JJOS, and that's where I tested BackFlip on them.

The 1000 already reads WAVs. Why do I need BackFlip?

For the program. Putting 64 sounds on 64 pads by hand, one menu at a time, is the slow part. BackFlip builds the .PGM with every sound already on its pad, and lets you trim, tune and level each one first.

What files does BackFlip make?

One WAV per sound and a .PGM program, together in one folder named after your kit.

Mac or Windows?

Both. BackFlip runs on macOS 13 or later (Intel and Apple Silicon, signed and notarized by Apple) and on Windows 10 and 11. Your purchase email has both downloads.
